Mozambique Braces for Sharp Rise in Airfare
Speaking to reporters, Nhate painted a stark picture of the price surge gripping global aviation fuel markets, revealing that costs have more than doubled — climbing from approximately $769 per ton to $1,595 — a dramatic escalation directly tied to supply disruptions stemming from the US-Israeli war on Iran.
The closure of one of the world's most critical energy corridors has sent oil prices sharply higher, triggering cascading effects across global supply chains and placing mounting pressure on airline operating budgets.
"The worsening political context in the Middle East has had a direct impact not only on the price of the product itself, but also on freight costs," Nhate said, as quoted by AIM.
Nhate warned that airlines are already absorbing significantly higher operational costs — a burden that could soon be transferred directly to passengers in the form of steeper ticket prices.
The alert echoes a warning issued by Mozambican President Daniel Chapo at the end of March, who cautioned that domestic fuel prices could begin rising should the Middle East conflict persist. "Perhaps around the end of April and beginning of May, according to the calculations we are making now, we will start to see these prices [increase] if the war continues," Chapo said, as quoted by Club of Mozambique.
The ripple effects are already being felt across African aviation. Kenya Airways raised fares across its entire network last month, while Air Mauritius announced it would press ahead with further fuel surcharge increases. Ethiopian Airlines similarly hiked its fuel surcharge, pledging to keep a close watch on regional developments. RwandAir, meanwhile, has introduced a temporary fuel surcharge adjustment on select routes.
